Chamber Length for Rail Vehicles Starts Its Count at 16,000 mm

Chamber Length for Rail Vehicles Starts Its Count at 16,000 mm

The most common error in sizing a rail vehicle chamber is taking the vehicle length and adding a metre for safety. The real figure is larger than that, and for a reason unrelated to safety margins.

Chamber length for rail vehicles equals part length, plus technician working space at both ends, plus the clearance needed to open the door and bring the part in. All three are calculated, not estimated.

Why the range begins at 16,000 mm

Structure chambers in this class are published from 16,000 mm to 24,000 mm. The lower bound is not arbitrary: it is the smallest practical size that takes a car-length part with working space around it.

Anything shorter falls into the truck and bus range, which starts at 8000 mm — a range for shorter parts, not rail vehicles.

Length does not move on its own

Every increase in length raises chamber volume, and volume raises the airflow needed to change the air. That is why capacity is always quoted with size: the delivered range in this class reaches 190,000 + 190,000 m³/h.

Heat output follows the same logic, extending across this family to 600,000 kcal/h.

Frequently asked questions

Can the chamber be shortened by loading from both ends?

Entry method is one of the design inputs and is studied with the size. The decision belongs to the site survey stage because it governs door and duct positions together.

How much service area is needed around the chamber?

A booth needs service space around it, not only its own footprint — to swing the doors open and to reach the air handling unit and filter box at change-out.

Does the floor need special preparation?

The published requirement is a suitable concrete floor. Cabins with a full steel-grid pit require an excavation or an entry ramp.
