Truck Box Body Coating: A Standalone Part, Not Part of a Vehicle

Truck Box Body Coating

Many truck bodybuilding workshops coat the box before mounting it on the chassis. At that point the work leaves vehicle logic and enters industrial part logic.

Truck box body coating is measured by the dimensions of the box itself and how it is supported inside the chamber, not by the dimensions of the truck it will end up on.

What changes when the part stands alone

Three things: size comes from the box rather than the vehicle; support becomes a design item because the part does not stand on wheels; and coated area rises because interior faces may enter the work.

The third is the one most often missed. An open box coated inside and out has close to double the area that shows from outside.

Support is a design item

A part that will not stand on its own needs provision for hanging or moving it inside the chamber — the same item that is defined for industrial parts on custom builds, fixed from the weight and shape of the part before manufacture rather than after.

And the support position affects the finish: the point carrying the part is the point the gun cannot reach, and the cycle is planned around that.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smaller chamber if I coat the box detached?

Usually shorter, yes. But the final size is fixed from the largest box you take in plus working space around it and the space the support occupies.

Does the heat curve differ?

It is set to the finishing material rather than to the part. Box bodies often carry industrial coatings that differ from vehicle topcoats, and that genuinely changes the curve.

Will one booth serve boxes and whole vehicles?

Yes if the size is built on the larger of the two. The choice between them is made on the share each takes of your work, not on whether it is possible.
